Alert Topics are one of three different types of Topics on Vable. When an Alert Topic is created, it can only be included in a single Newsletter and is not available to be cloned or shared to MyVable. This can be useful when you are including sensitive information on clients, competitors or industries.

Alert Topics are created from within a Newsletter’s Configure Topic dialog and/or from the Sources page when source(s) are selected to be added directly to a Newsletter.

Creating an Alert Topic within a Newsletter

Open your Newsletter (or create a Newsletter shell if necessary) and click the teal Configure Newsletter button on the left. A dialog will appear where you will see any Topics already connected to the Newsletter and several buttons at the bottom of the window - here you will select New Topic.

In the dialog box, type over the existing text to create a title for the Topic and add a description if you wish. Click on the teal colored checkmark and then you will see a prompt to Add New Vable Search.

Click on the prompt, and you will be taken to the Articles page to create your search. A teal banner across the top indicates that you have been brought to a new page in a workflow which is part of your current process. You also have the option to go back to the Newsletter details page without saving your progress.

Once you are happy with your results, click Save (in the top right of the teal banner) and you will be returned to the Newsletter page. Type over the highlighted text to create a name for the search, and add a description if you wish.

Click on the teal colored checkmark to save your search. You will then be asked to activate the search. Select Yes to immediately include results in your Topic or skip the activation if you plan to continue editing the search prior to including results in your Newsletter. Articles will not populate a Newsletter unless they have been activated here.

You now have the option to add a further search to the Topic. Repeat the process until you have completed building your Alert Topic.

There are a number of icons associated with each search. If you hover over the blue filter icon, you can preview the search query and applied filters. Click on the toggle to activate/deactivate the search. Clicking on the cogwheel will take you into a workflow, allowing you to modify the search. The red trash icon will delete the search.

You have now created your Topic. When you have finished creating and managing the Topics for your Newsletter, close the dialog box. It will appear as an Alert Topic type in the list view of the Topics page.

Creating an Alert Topic from a Source

You can create an Alert Topic directly from a source within the Source page. This will feed all content from the selected source(s) into the Alert Topic with no additional search query or filtering applied.

To do so, navigate to the Sources page and locate the required source(s) by searching, filtering or scrolling through the list view. Use the checkbox to the left of the source name to select the required source(s), then select the three dots icon at the top of the list. From the dropdown menu, select the option to Add X source(s) to newsletter.

You will then be prompted to select which Newsletter you are adding the source(s) to. You have the option to select an existing Newsletter and choose the Add to Selected option, or to create a new Newsletter using the Add to New option.

Within the next dialog box, type over the existing text fields to name the Topic and the search. Add descriptions if you wish, and click on the checkmark to save.

You will then be asked to activate the search. Select Yes to immediately include results in your Topic. Articles will not populate a Newsletter unless they have been activated here.

You have now created an Alert Topic, directly from a source. When you have finished creating and managing the Topics for your Newsletter, close the dialog box. Your new Topic will appear as an Alert Topic type in the list view of the Topics page.

Amending an Alert Topic

To amend an Alert Topic, select it from the Topics page list view. Click on Configure Topic and make changes as required.

Alternately, you can open the related Newsletter and click the teal Configure Newsletter button. You can then delete the Topic entirely, edit individual searches (using the cogwheel icon beside the individual search) or add new searches.

When editing individual searches, make all changes and click Save to overwrite the search parameters.

A Topic created from within a Newsletter is not available to be repurposed in any other Newsletters. Should you change your mind and wish to make your Alert Topic available to other Newsletters, you can convert it into a General Topic.
